SEO means Search Engine Optimization. Here we want to explain about meta tags and their importance in filling out these fields when you make a new post or page. Metadata is extra information for your page or post that google search engines look for when indexing your site. The input fields are found scrolling down on the Add New Post or Add New Page screens and look like this:
Each field is indexed by google and appears on the Google Search page which looks like this when you search:
The Title tag is what appears on the google search page above. The description tag appears after the date and below the green site url. The keywords are words you use to search for a page or post. In this example we used the keywords of ann, campbell, thee, lady, hawk to find your site http://theeladyhawk.com. Google uses information from the title, description and keywords to rank your site on the search. Pages with a title, description and keywords that all match are given a higher priority and appear higher in the search.
Now, go to the WordPress admin and view All Pages, then go in and edit the About page. Scroll down and you will see that the metadata fields are filled in, and that what is in the title, description and keywords all match one another. This is how you tell Google what’s important in your page or post and get a high ranking.
I have set some global tags which will be used if you forget to put anything into these fields, but it’s a good practice to fill in these metadata fields each time you post a new article. Use the same title as your post for the title tag, use the first paragraph of your post for the description tag, and use keywords that are contained in your title and description to get the highest possible search engine ranking.
If you aren’t sure what to put in the metadata fields, just let me know and I will help you figure out what is best for your post or page. Call me or text me on Facebook!
